OBITUARY.
A WELL-KNOWN ACTOR.
Received November 9, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, November 8. Mr Lionel Brough, the actor, is dead at the age of 73.
With the death of Lionel Brough passes away qne of the best known figures on the English stage. He was born in Pontypool in 1836, and was the eon of Barnabas Brcugh, a dramatic author of repute, and is father of Sydney and Mary Brough, and uncle of Fanny Brough, and the late Robert Brough. "Lai" Brough, as he was known in the profession, maie bis first appearance on the stage at the London Lyceum, under Vestris' management in "Prince Petty Pe>," in December, 1854, but after four years , returned to newspaper work He next gave entertainments, and was the first to tour" the province? With a "ghost" show. He returned to the London stage in 1867, playing with Ellen Terry and Henrietta Hodson, in "The Double Marriage." I His first London Buccess was when playing in "Dearerar than Life*' with J. L. Toole, at the Queen's, Long Acre, in 1868. Sir Charles Wyndham and the late Sir Htnry Irving were also in the cast. His best impersonations were Tony ] Lumpkin, which he played 777 times, and Bob Acres. The deceased actor has appeared in burlesque, comic opera and Shakesperean parts. He has visited America and South Africa, and until quite recently was appearing in London. He made several appearances before the late Queen Victoria and the present King. He is the last of the original members of the Savage Club, and was one of the original members of the Green Room Club.
