PAHIATUA NEWS.

Monday Mr J. Webb, headmaster of the Tokomaiu School, and formerly of the Pahiatua teaching staff, was a visitor to Pahiatua to-day. Mr and Mrs S. P. Girdwood leave Wellington by tne Drayton Grange on the 20th of this month, on an extended trip to England. It is sincerely hoped that the trip will be beneficial to Mrs Girdwood, who for some time past has been in feeble health Mr Stan Wrightwell was successful in securing two firsts and the challenge prize at the PaJmerston Show last week, with his greyhound bitch "Just,in Time."

A novelty to be seen at Thos. Horton's, Ltd., Pahiatua Nursery, is the Elkahorn Fern. The firm have a large stock of p*»lms, ferns, and other pot plants, in fancy pots, suitable for Christmas presents, and customers ordering these from a distance can depend upon leaving them carefully packed. Visitors are shown over the nursery every day

except Sunday. Mr P. Tulloch, land agent, has disposed of Mr?J, Godso's house and to.vn section.

A batch of in n" arrived last week, and another contingent arrived today, to do some Government work on the Waiowaka Road, near Rakanui. Mr T. Proctor, of the Government Department of Labour, came up with the men. The backblock settlers will doubtlessbe Very pleased to see the men at work on the road mentioned.

At St. Paul's Presbyterian Church la3t evening, the Kev. Chalmers Mill gave a resume of the work done at the meeting of the General Assembly, held in Christchurch laot week, at which the reverend gentleman attended.

Messrs P. E. Debreceny and Co. have been appointed Pahiatua agerts for the Cyclone Woven Wire Fence and Gate Company. At St. Mark's Church, Mangatainoka, yesterday, the Kev. A. W. H. Compter], of the Wellington Boys' College, occupied the pulpit. The congregation both morning and evening was very large. The Rev. Compton was formerly in charge of St, Mark's parish. I understand that Mr compton will officiate at a wedding in the same church to-morrow (Tuesday). Given a fine day to-morrow, there promises to be a large attendance at the official opening of the BowL mg Green.

.'At the meeting of the Pahiatua Akitio A. and P. Association on Saturday evening, the following resolution was passed:—ln reference to the Agricultural Show to be held on the racecourse, in the event of there being only one entry, the question of awarding a first ptize be left to the judge's discretion; if less than three entries, no necond prize; if less than six, no third prize; also at the Horticultural and Industrial exhibits in the Drill Hall, prizes only to be awarded where there is competition, unless the article is of sufficient merit, in the opinion of the judge, in which case half of the prize money ■will be given. Messrs Burgess and Wilson were appointed a sub-com-mitteee to draw up an amended schedule of the Drill Hall exhibits, and Messrs' Tosswill, Husband, Prosser and Taylor, a like committee to allocate the prize money and draw up rules for the horse, cattle and sheep sections for the agricultural show.

The following team will represent the Pahiatua cricket team to play the Masterton Club at Masterton tomorrow :—Rev. Speer, Entwistle, Fysb, ■ Wright, Oldridge, Hobbs, Thomson, Pitteudreigh, Wilson, R, Welch, Walsh, Tipping, Dobbie. The local team will leave by the 8.5 a m. train.
