Mr J Staliworthy, M.P. for Kaipqra, and Mrs Staliworthy are on a visit to Masterton.

Mr J. Pinhey, who has been seriously ill with rheumatic fever for some time past, is making splendid progress towards recovery. His many friends will be pleased to learn that he was able to be taken for a short drive yesterday for the first tine since his illneds;

Miss Heba Barlow, who has ap- J peared several times in Masterton as leading lady with the late John F. Sheridan, has received an engagement in England, and leaves for the Old Country immediately. Mr Bland Holt, the well-known Australian theatrical manager; "'ill in all probability shortly disband his dramatic company, whfch has be a .u in existence for almost twenty years. It is Mr Holt's intention to take a trip to England early next year. The many friends of Mr J. B. Innes, of Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, will regret to learn | that he was the victim of an apo plectic seizure on Saturday, and lies at hss home in a critical condi' ion. Mr J. B. Lewis, barrister and i solicitor, of Hokitika, who died last I week, aged 67 years, was born in London, and went to Victoria, with his parents in the sixties. He entered the law there. Mr Lewis arrived in Otago in 1868. The following year lie reached the West Coast, and shortly afterwards became manager for Mr S. M. South, Crown Prosecutor of Westiand. Subsequently he returned to Dunedin and became associated with Mr John McGregor, with whom he completed his law studies. In 1873 he was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. He settled in Hokitika in 1882. The deceased was president of *he Westiand Law Society at its inception, and he held that position continuously until the time of his death.
