CRICKET.
SENIOR. CARLTON v. LIMITED. Carlton gained an easy victory ov«r United on the Park Oval on Saturday last by 227 runs. Carlton in their second innings, batting with nine men, made 201. F. Welch and A. Styles put on 118 for the first wicket —a Wairarupa record. F. Welch was top score with 75; made uy good cricket, though he gave a chance at 40. It was certainly the most vigorous display of the many serviceable displays this player has yiven. He hit no leas than twelve 4's, and his innings was certainly very meritorious one. He was an hour and twenty mini]Us at the wickets.
Styles came next wi'.h a beautiful ly compiled 49, made in his be.st batting form. He played somawhat steadier than he usually doee, being an hour and fifty minutes at the wickets. He got the leg balls away nearly e\ery time nicely to the boundary. Madsen compiled 39 (not ont) in a mannar that gave one a glimpse of his form of by-gone days, when he was a terror to the bowlers. He was only about fifteen minutes at the wickets, and his score included six 4's.
Arthur Hoar put together 22 in his usual capable style, but the rest of the batsmen aid not trouble the bowlers much. Rothenberg handled his bowling material in an excellent manner, and it was mainly due to this fact that Carlton's score was not bigger. The United team's fielding was very good till about 100 was up; then it slacked off with two exceptions —liothenberg and Walker, and the good work of thqse players was a splendid example to the rest of the team. Wiliiams was the best of the bowltrp, though he did not take as many wick:ts as Waters. Williams sends down a good leg break ball, and has a peculiar action in delivery. He would certainly have had a better average if United had fielded better at tirrie&. The task of getting 266 runs to win was beyond United's power, and they only reached 38 —batting two men short. Styles (4 for 20) and B. Welch (3 for 14) accounted for the wickets. The following were the scores: — CARLTON.
