PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar Resident Reporter) Saturday. PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL. The Pahiatua County Council held their month'y meeting to-day, all the Councillors being present. Tne matter of electing Hospital and various delegates was held over until tho annual meeting. Owing tu the Council not having an Engineer at the present time, the various Councillors put in reports on the work required in the various ridings. Crs Bolton and Barrell. spoke in reference to the sinking of the northern approach to the bridge over the Main Road between to Fah'atua and Mangatainoka, and suggested that a concrete bed to put in, so*as to make a permanent job, and by so doing the public traffic would not be stopped. Several councillors thought concrete was fast taking the place of woo'', ani it was decided to strengthen the bridge in the mean-, time, the matter of permanent repairs being left over until the appointment of an Engineer. It wa.3 reported that all the bridges in the county required screwinguu k On Cr Rosa' recommendation it was decidsd to erect a shoot at the limestone quarry now being o, ened at Kaitawa.

The appointment of an Engineer, Which was left over from last Council meeting was finally settled, Mi R. J. Dillon, of 'Jollingwood, being appointed. Accounts amounting to £564 9s 7d were passed or payment. GENERAL. Tne Pahiatua Borough Council will meet on Monday evening. In another column Mr J. G. Brechin, announces that he wishes to purchase for cash a windmill, tower, tank and stand. The following hours will be observed at the local Post Office on Tuesday next (King's birthday):— All outward mails close at 8 a.m.; 'the telegraph office will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., a.id 7"p.m. to 8 p.m.; the telephone exchange will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the Post Office will be closed all clay, bu: there will be a counter delivery on Monday evening, between 7 p.m.

and 8 p.m. An excellent musical programme has been arranged for the -compli • mentary social to be tendered to Mr and Mrs Walter Norrell, in the ..Drill Hall on Thursday evening next. The secretory of The PahiatuaAkitio A. and P. Association, Mr J. A. Walsh, was a visitor to the Palmerston Show yesterday in the interof his society. Mr Walsh informs that he interviewed several proaent stock breeders, who promised eir assistance at the opening' show i be held here in February nctx. The milk.supjy at the Mangataioka cheese factory is increasing daily, and about 2.500 gallons are now being delivered daily. On the 10th inst. £925 will be paid out to suppliers for October's milk supply.

Mr C. Evans, formerly of the firm of Hare and Evans, and Mr W. Phillips, late headmaster of the Makomako School, were visitors to Pahiatua to-day. The President of the Makuri Sports Soeiety informed me to-day that the Society this year are still going to have the opeu events for all comers on the programme. The society is in a good financial position, the ground ia in good order, and the committee are endeavouring to place before the public a very programme for the sports in New Year's Day.

The following team will represent the Mangatainoka Cricket Club against S. Matthew's, Masterton, on Tuesday uext, on the Mangatainoka ground .-—Crawford, Chatwin, Clapham, Pearcey, Hawke, Grace, Polglase, Bottomley, Bacon, May, Coston, Williams. Emergencies: Vowell and Ashby. COMMERCIAL. The first sale at the Mart, held by the new firm, Messrs P. E. Debre' ceny and Co., took place this afternoon. Mr JDebreceny wielded the hammer, and promises to make a first-class auctioneer. Pigs realise the following prices:—Weaners 10s 9d to 12s 6 ;d slips, 12s 9d to J 3s 6d; stores, small, 16s; stores, good, 24s 6d to 3CH. The pig pens were all

filled, but the demand u-as not quite so keen as a short time back* Prices for other produce and poultry ruled as followFowls.—Roosters, 2a; prize cock, and two hens, 10s; pood eating potatoes realised 6s 6d per cwt; rhubarb, Gd per bunch; gooseberries, 3d per lb, and sundries and other articles at full market rates. The firm will hold a clearing sale at Mr Norrell's on Wednesday next.
