TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland.") The twenty-seventh contest for the New Zealand Cup waj deci led on baturday, and once again the top weight division failed to break the bng Bpell of the lower scale victories. there was a general idea throughout the country that one of tho3e at the top of the list would prevail this year, and judging by the decided merit of the track work there was every reason to support the contentions relative to the very bright chances of at least two of the top weights. All Red had been doing really good work up to the eventful day, while Bobrikoff had no difficulty in scoring track records. His victory was thought t'a be merely a matter of ordinary luck in the race, but as on many previous occasions weight seems to have had the effect of impairing his undoubted brilliancy in the strongly run journey of two miles. The winner, Lady Lucy, is bred on staying lines, and no trainer in the Dominion is more capable of landing his charges at the post fit and well than the owner, Mr F. Tilley. One of the surprises of the race was the running of Roosevelt, who finished up in second place. Many who saw the Menschikoff horse at Trentham a fortnight ago voted nim altogether too big in condition to see the Cup distance out. The third horse, Sir Prize, again proved his staying ability. The Stewards' Handicap fell to the consistent Gold Reef mare, Gold Lace, who scored from the brilliant Penates. The result of the Cup and Stewards' double, means a big vein for the leading bookmakers of the country.
