BUSINESS COMMUNITY TAKEN
BY SURPRISE
Rq'3ived Noverr.Ddr 8, 1.10 a.m. SYDNttY, NoverrDer 7. Ali the Northern miners' lodges, with the exception of two which have jet to meet., have decided to strike. There is no prominent grievance on which the decision rests. Dut the grievances are numerous.
The executive of the Coal Lumpers' Union met to-night, and decided to hold a meeting on Monday to enable a common understanding on the trouble to be arrived at. In order that all members shall have a voice in the ultimate discussion it has been decided t'nat work shall ceass between 8 a.m and 2 p.m. to-morrow. There is a pretty solid belief that the miners will be supported by the wharf labourers, who also meet tomorrow to discuss the situation. The crisis has taken the business community by surprise. Although discontent was simmering in the Newcastle district for some time active measures were not anticipated.
