JUDGMENT FOR THE UNION SHIPPING COMPANY.

By Telegraph—Press Association, WELLINGTON, November 2.

Judgment was given by Dr M'Arthur S.M., to-day, in connection with three claims for luggage lost in the wreck of the Penguin. In deciding in favour of the Union Company, the Magistrate held that th 6 meaning of section 293 of the Shipping and Seamen Act was that if a shipowner, by himself or his agents, used due diligence to take a ship seaworthy when she started, he should not be liable for what happened after wards when the ship was at sea, and he had no more control over her.
