LAND FOR THE LANDLESS.

IMPROVED FARM SETTLE-

MENTS. RUSH FOR SECTIONS. The improved farm seel ions available for landless married men generally along the North Island Main Trunk railway line were balloted for at tie District Lands Office, Wellington. There were 689 applications for 102 sections in the Hunua and Kaitieke survey districts, situated between Raurimu and Piriuka, and varying in area from 50 acres to 200 acres, chiefly loresl clad, but a few sections comprise fern and scrub country. Although applications were invited from suitable landless married men, special power was give tor preference to applications from retreched civil servants, workers dispensed with during the last twelve months from the Main Trunk railway line and Government road works, and from other suitable married men out of employment and without much capital. The regulations provide for advances lor improvements. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr James Mackenzie, explained to the applicants, 550 of whom had completed their applications, that this ballot was different to the ordinary ballots. It was not a ballot to which all were eligible, but the object was really to assist persons who could not get land in the ordinary way, and the Land Board had to make a very care ful sslection, not that the rejected were not probably just as good aa those selected, but the board had to first consider the applicants it was to help. He pointed out that every applicant was allowed one month in which to go and look at his section, and if he did not like it, then he need not go on it. If he (the ] Co mmissiuner) did not hear from the applicant during that period, the section wouid probably be forfeited, and allotted to someone else who Was not successful at the original ballot.
