PAHIATUA NEWS.
{From Oar Resident Reporter) j Monday. The Rev. Isaacson, of S. Peter's Church, will attend the Anglican Conference, to he held at Masterton this month. On Saturday evening the employees of the W.F.C.A. met together and presented Mr J. Godao, who has been manager of the drapery department for several years, with a case of pipes as a mark of esteem. The gift was suitably acknowledged by Mr Godao. The recipient will be much missed at ■social functions in Pahia»ua,as he was always willing to assist at concerts. Mr Godso will leave for JNelson at the latter end of this week, where he will enter into business on his own account. The morning and evening services at St. Piul'a Church, yesterday, were taken by Mr Stevenson, of Woodville, who is a very fluent speaker. In the evening he delivered an interesting sermon, taking his text from the 27th Psalm which was listened to with attention by a large congregation. On Saturday evening a double accident occurred to the brakes and horses of the W.F.C.A. and Messrs J. W. Sturton and Co. It appears that the former's brake was being driven homeward with a horse tied behind it Messrs Sturton's brake was in close attendance. Coming up the Kaitawa hill the horse that was being led pulled back, and swung itself over the bank. The driver of Messrs Sturton's vehicle went to the assistance, and cut the rope. The horse rolled down the bank, causing the other horses to take fright, and bolt. The brake and horses ( '6) also went'over the bank. Mr C. de Malmanche and the county workmen, Who were close by at once got to work, and the four horses were brought up on to the road again, without suffering any serious damage. The monthly "strangers' tea" will be held in St. Paul's Snuday Schoolroom next Sanday afternoon at 5.30 p.m.
I was informed to-day that the bridge o«er the Mangatainoka river at the northern approach of the township of Mangatainoka, had sunk six inches, and men were busy effecting necessary repairs. The county teams are at present busily engaged metalling part of the Hinemoa road. This road a short time ago was stated to be the vorst road in the county, and the settlers will doubtless be very pleased to see the teams at work, especially as several of the settlers are going to supply milk to the cheese factory. Mr Troy, the well-known and genial manager of the Commercial Hotel, is at present on a holiday trip to Wellington. Mr P. E. Debreceny, who was recently host of the Club Hotel, has purchasad the "Mart" from R. Mitchell and Co., and will take over the business, I understand, almost immediately. Pigs at the " Mart" on Saturday realised the following prices:—Weaners, 9s to 12s; slips, 12s to 16b; stores, 17s 6d.
