THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES.
On Saturday evening Messrs Thompson and Payne presente I their first change of programme. Among the new subjects shown is a dramatic study "Heard Over the Phone." This waj followed by a fine picture "Tame Animals at Work," depicting how animals can be trained. One sees a pig harnessed to a small cart, and going through such evolutions as would not be thought possible. One also sees ostriches with keepers mounted on their i ades going through their paces like an ordinary horse. "Gingerbread" is a comic subject, and caused great lauchter. "A Romance in Life" is an intensely dramatic film, showing how the daugh- !■ ter of a countess forsakes her home for her poor lover. "Logging in CanaJa" is one of tne Pest industrial subjects ever presented in Masterton, the bushmen are seen tosling in the snow telling the giants of the forest, the huge trees crash to eaith and [after preparation are at last trans--1 ported to the sea by ingenious methods. "The Adventures of an Ardent Lover" creates great sympathy for the unfortunate couple, whose courting is spoilt by an irate parent. "Over the Rockies on a Freight Train" is a line scenic film, the train passes through huge fields of fnow and the magnificent grandeur of the sr.ow-clad mountains is vividly shown. One of the star pictures of ' the evening was "Bleriot Flying the Channel " This picture shows in full detail the monoplane in which Bleriot made his wonderful flicht. One can see the machine being taken from its housing, and towed to the starting point, it rises like a huge bird, anj one can foilow its flight from the shores of France to England. Ihe star picture of the evening was a fine cinematographic representation of Victorien Sardou's famous play "La Tosca," with Madam Sarah Bernhardt m the role of Floria. The dramatic story of Floria and her knightly lover is brought out in a verv faithful manner, the climax of excitement being reached when Floria stabs the villainous Scorpia and commits suicide. There are numerous other fine subjects shown, among which "The Henley Regatta, 1909," "A Cold and Its Consequences," "Bertie Buys a Bulldog," deserve mention. This programme will De shown tonight and Tuesday, and on Wednesday there will be another complete change of programme.
