The Victoria Racing Club's meeting opened to-day in delightfully cool weather.

The programme opened with the Maiden Plate, captured by Barn, the New Zealand-bred Gunpowder running rather disappointingly. The Marybyrnong Piate was a gift to Desert Rose, whom, like Lager and Roseen, the other placed horses, an J Barn, the previous winner, were sired by Malster. In the Hotham Handicap Delaware ran a good race, leading with Vivacious for most of the journey, but being beaten to fourth place in the finish. Seddon was only once prominent. The Derby was a good race. Moat of the running was made by Lord Foote, who led the field a merry' pace. Entering the home turn Prince Foote came away, winning easily to the great delight of the crowd, who eagerly predicted him a Cup winner on form displayed.

The Melbourne [ Stakes was a rattling good race, Alawa, another of the Malster progeny, scoring after a fine finish with Trafalgar. Tne New Zealanu-bred Golden Slipper was. s always prominent in the race, but could not get nearer than third owing to earlier efforts. Artillerie was at the tail end of the field most of the time, but finished sixth full of running.

Kerlie, sired by Stepniak, accounted for the Coburg Stakes in a smartlj run race, beating the Malster gelding Malmsey by thr<?e hngthi, Son-of-a Gun being two lengths away third. Montcalm locked like wii.ning at one time. Artillerie failed to show up at all in this race. The following were the results:— Maribyrnong Plate.—Deaert Rose,. 9.1, 1; Lager, 8.5, 2; Roseen, 8.'5, 3. Also started—Habel, Indiscreet. Rigadoon, Rollingstone, - Rheim, Gunplay, Flamen, Tanami, Procure, Carcanet. Kern, Teringa, Baza. Gunplay was first to break the line, but Desert Rose came out entering the course proper and was never headed, winning by a length and a quarter. Time, lmin 3|sec, Hutham Handicap.—Footpad, 6.10, 1; Vivacious. 6.9,/ 2; Yarrabar, 7.2, 3. Ten others ran. Won by threequarters of a length. Time, 2min 37sec. VICTORIAN DERBY. Prince Foote (McCarthy) 1 Dai.ilo (Connell) 2 Lord Footo (McLachlan) 3

Also started-Manana, Mutilator, Sir Edwin, Mala, Lady San, Byplay. To a good start Manana and Prince Fpote were first to lead. Lord Foote then went out and led by twelve lengths fos halt a mile from Manana, Danilo and Frintie Foote. Coming into the straight Prince Foote and Danilo caught bim, Prince Foote dashing out and winning easily by six lengths, a head separating Lord Foote and Danilo. Lady San was fourth, Byplay fifth, Mutilator sixth, Sir Edwin seventh, Mala eighth and Manana last. Time, 2min 37sec. Coburg Stakes.—Kerlie 1, Malmsey 2, Son of-a-Gun 3. Fifteen others started. Won by three lengths. t Melbourne Stakes.—Aiawa 1, Trafalgar 2, Golden Simper 3. Other Post. Town, Blue Book, Gaby, Pendil, Hyman, Lord Nolan, Artillerie, Nushka. Hyrcgt and Golden Slipper made "ma t of the running, Alawa: always being handy. Trafalgar, Alawa and, Golden Slipper swung round together in the home turn, Alawa winning by a length and a half. Golden Slipper was eix lengths away third. Time, 2min Tfsec.
