PACIFIC NATIVES.
DECLINE IN POPULATION.
SYDNEY, October 30.
The Rev. Mr Banks, Secretary of the Methodist Missions, in a letter to the press dealing with the decrease of natives in the Pacific Islands, says that after years spent among the natives he has come to the concussion that age-long savagery has robbed the natives of the finer human instincts and strength of character, which make for continuation of the community's life. Whatever the primary cause may be, the decline of population is only too
patent. The writer sounds a warning against increasing importation of Indian and Chinese coolies, and urges the necessity of the Government taking action to establish industrial colleges and settlements, and to train natives to put their lands to profitable use, and. give them aims and interests in life.
