TOPICAL READING.

A WORTHY OBJECT. Th 3 movement now being organised by the local nursing and ambulance divisions of St. John Ambulance Brigade to raise sufficient funds for a qualified district nurse, to. be 3ta> tioned in Masterton, to work among the sick and poor in the town and country is a most worthy one, and deserving of the utmost encouragement and sympathy. Ths proposal is to hold a mohster bazaar at the same time as the next Masterton Show, when it is hopsd to raise a sufficient sum to engage the ' services of a certificated nurse tor a period of two years. The scheme w ! !l he worked on similar, lines to those now observed in Ghridtchun hj: ; and -Wellington, * which have proved so successful. In Wellington the movement commenced with one nurse, was quickly increased to two, and now are being taken to engage the services of a third. The scheme:, has also been taken up in Palmerston Norch with so much enthusiasm that the money required was raised in an incredibly short space of time. It will be remembered that a simihr scheme was organised some three years ago by the local brigade, when funds were required for the purchase of oar ambulance brougham. It was supported i i a vviiole hearted manner by both town anil country resi • dents, and although at the time were not wanting those who held that the broihgam was quite unneces-ary, there is no doubt that the expenditure has been justified over and over ag.ii •. In cinneclion with the nursing scheme it may not be generally known, but every Friday afternoon a "sewing bee,' 4 consisting ot interested iaditiP, under the supervision of Mrs Joy, meet in the Dominion I^al 1 , where they work industriously prepuiog articles for the forthcoming bazaar. There is, however, plenty of room for naw members, and lac]i s who can afford a few hours of their time will be welcomed by the members of the "bee."' The committee are meeting with most encouraging results, and they are co fiient that their appeal will not he h vain.
