MASTERTON RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING—SECOND DAY. the weather conditions were not so favourable yesterday as on Thursday, rain falling durin? the greater part of the afterneon. Notwithstand • ing this the attendance was very satisfactory, and speculation per medium of the totalisator and bookmakers was again brisk. The racing was excellent throughout, and in some of the dashing finishes the spectators were in doubt until the appearance of the official placing. The track kept in good condition right through, ami good times were registered in most of the events. The sum of £3,811 was put through the totalisator. Five went out for the Hack Hurdles, and Silken Rein scored an easy victory from Sir Lethe and Kelso. For the-Hack Scurry, Moree was made a pronounced favourite, but Afterthought, well ridden by H. Caitns, was well placed in the early stages, and won a nice race from Over Rate and' Wheturangi. The winner was trained by W. Garrett, the Masierton trainer. Marengo was the p .pular fancy for the Tradesmen's Hack. No Trumps at once took op the running, and was joined in the straight by Marengo. R. Hatch, on the latter appeared to finish too j confidently, and was beaten by a head by No Trumps. Sir Fricso and Ma'?. taari carried most money in the President's Handicap. Iranui and Sir Frisco were out in front early, and although Moloch made a big deavour to catch them in the straight, the two leaders held their places and amidst considerable excitement ran a dead heat They are both trained by J. W. Lowe, at Trentham. It seldom falls to the lot of the racing public to witness a dead heat by contestants from the one stable. Ruemac was the popular fancy for the High-weight Hack, and in a stirring finish won by half a Itngth from Maku. The speedy Lace Collar made a runaway race of the Electric Hack, and Vi scored a meritorious, victdrv in the Stewards' Handicap. Te Kahurangi showed plenty of pace for five furlongs, but Longner and Te Ru failed to display their first day brilliancy. The meeting was brought to a conclusion with the Welter Hack, of one mile, and this race provided one of the best finishes witnessed at the meeting. Hilanan, Captain Bell and St. Brandon carried an the running in the first stages, then Captain Bell took charge and led down the straignt. Half way j down Gold Bird and Knight Com mander closed with the leader, an I under whip the first-named won from Captain Ball by a head, with Knight Commander a head away third, and Hilanan. When heads were turned for home Captain Bell was in charge, but Goli Bird and Knight Commander improved their position, and in a most exciting finish Gold Bird scored by a heal from Captain Bell, with Knight Commander a close third.
