The by-election at Bermndsey, owning to the death of Mr G. Copar (Liberal) resulted: 1 —
J, Humphreys, Unionist and Tariff Keformer 4,278, L. H. Hughes, Liberal 3,291 Doctor Salter, Socialist 1,435 The Opposition papers are jubilant, believing that Bermondsey ia the index constitunecy.always awing ing in sympathy with National foaling.
The "Chronicle" declares that the reßU.lt illustrates the failure of the British representatives system, and the need for electoral reform.
Mr? Chap and Miss Mielans, members of the Women's Freedum League, entered two pdliner boths and emptied bottlas" of corrosive fluid into the ballot boxes, but only a few papers were spoilt, The acid splashed on to the face of Thorley, the presiding officer. The hospital authorities state that probably ho will lose an eye. The League admit the deliberate plot to invalidate the chction, but deny thit vitrjl was used.
