A letter received from an Australian resident at Manila states that When the Harlow arrived, Captain Brace reported in reference to the uapposed Waratah that he saw a largo steamer carrying two masthead and red sidelights, with a tremendous amount ot smoke issuing trom her. He called the chief engineers's attention, and they came to the conclusion that the steamer was to Durban for assistance. While watching the vessel a huge flash occurred, throwing flames three hundred feet into the air, and a few seconds later a much larger explosion occurred. When it cleared all the lights of the steamer had disappeared. As there were bush firea along the coast, in the chief officer's opinion the flames were from the fires, but they could not understand the disappearance of the steamer's lights, as she had not / signalled for heip before the explosV ion.
