WAIRARAPA P. AND A. SOCIETY.
PEOPLE'S DAY. A real summer's day tempered with a pleasant breeze greeted the People's Day of the Wairarapi Pas ■ toral and Agricultural Society's Show at Carterton yesterday. The result was a record attendance, people flocking in from all parts of the district. The trains unloaded visitors from Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Manawatu and Wariganui. Outside the large oval the people were standing four deep, whilst both grandstands were well filled with spectators watching the judging of various herd classee, and later the jumping competitions. The officials and the courteous Sacretary, Mr H. S. Moss, and his assistants had most complete arrangements made for the smooth working of the business details of the Show.
The luncheon under the supervision of Mr G. W. Deller, was served to the judges and officials in a most liberal manner.
During the afternoon the Carterton Brass Band played several selections of music, which considerably relieved the proceedings. A grand parade of stock took place at 2 o'clock, marshalled oy Mr W. Howard Booth. The parade attracted the attention of almost everybody on the ground, and applause was frequent during the progress of the march.
There were several side-shows to interest the youthful visitors, and good business seemed to be doing.
A good deal of interest was centred in the weight-guessing competition for fat bullock, five sheep, five iambs and fat pig, the resulis for which are not yet available. The produce hall was open to visitors yesterday, the judging having occupied the whole of the previous day.
The centre of attraction in the hall was the exhibit of factory cheese, for which there were four classes with 48 entries. Competition was very keen, and the judges, Messrs p. Cuddie and,W. M. Singluton, had great difficulty in deciding the awards, particularly in the export section. Here there were thir - teen competitors, the judging being by points. Curiously enough when the judges compared the totals on each exhibit eight ofjthem gained the same total, viz., 92$ points, which was the highest. The judges decided to leave it at that as the whole of the exhibits are to be sent home and finally judged there. The result of the home judging will be awaited with interest, in order to see what variation there 3b in the quality of the cheese in a couple of months' time.
In the points prizes for factory cheese Belvedere Factory won Mr J. Adamson's gold medal, the maker being Mr T. P. Saxelby, 371 points, and Dalerield Factory, Mr T. M. West, secured Mr A. McKenzie's gold medal with 370 points, and,Dalefield and Featherston tied with 368J j points for Messrs J. B. MacEwan and Co.'a special prize of two guineas. The cows, whicli were milked on the first night of the Show, and again yesterday morning, was a very interesting section to dairy farmers. The milk was weighed and tested. Mr H. Feast, Greytown, won the first prize for purebred cow in milk with 25|lbs of miik, 5.6 test, total fat 1.428. Mr C. Morgan's (Carterton) "Flora," coming second with 341bs of milk of a 3.6 tost and 1.224 of butter fat In the class for heifer, three years in milk, Mr J. Billitigton, of Masterton, came first with hia jersey cross "Rose," 161ba milk, 6.4 test, 1.024 butter fat, the second being Mr S. W. Feast, Greytown, with a Shorthorn The heifer class was awarded to J. Sage's, Dalefield, "Beauty,"' which gave 1.056 of butter fat. The handsome Quibell Challenge Cup, to be won three times, for most points in any one of the principal classes in stud sheep, was a close contest. It was won by Messrs Slack Bros., Palmerston North, in English Leicesters with 31 points, the runner-up being Messrs Nelson Bros, with 30 points in Border Leicesters. The latter were the winners last year with 27 points in 1 Southdowns, , y, ,
The pig section was one of the most interesting on the ground. In Black Devon and Yorkshires Mr B. H. Slack, Palmerston North, practically swept the board, annexing the champion pow. a fine specimen of Black Devon. Messrs Slack Bro\ carried off practically everything in Berkshires, including the cha - pion boar. This animal wad also the champion at the recent Hawke's Bay show.
In draught stallions, four years and upwards, the championshiD fell to Mr J. W. Harding's (Waipukurau) magnificent animal Baron Graceful, sire Baron's Pride, clam Graceful, bred by Mr A. W. Montgomerie, Scotland. Mr R. Falloon, Rlasetrton, took second place with Brilliant Boy. In thorouh bred stallions, four years and upwards, the honour fill to Mr C. McCullougnh's Conqueror, sire Medallion, dam Siesta, bred by the late Me G. 6. S ead.
The poultry section dre\w a fairly representative number of entries, but he judge waa not altogether satisfied
, with the quality, atlhough some ' classes showed up iairly well, i The thiity-guinea'siiver rose bowl, | presented by the ladies of Carterton, for the best lady's hack to be ridden by lady, side saddle, and won three times in succession or five times at intervals, was annexed by Mr J. S. Nelson's (Woodville) beautiful bay gelding Dick, the rider being Miss Gallagher, and Mr Rangi llerihoma's (Masterton) Mahomet, ridden by Miss Ivy lorns was second. Mr W. E. Bidwill's twenty-guinea challenge cup, for the best hack in the Show, to be ridden by men, and won three times in succession or live times at intervals was keenly contested, the prize finally going to Mr D. McKer<zie'e(Masterton) fine chestnut Artful. The riding competition for giris was won by Miss B. Morison, and for boys by Mr Owen Cadwallader Misa Jenkins proved the winner in [ the best lady rider competition, and Mr W. D. Watson's bay gelding Gentleman JacK proved successful in the best turnout competition, to be driven by lady. Keen interest was manifested in the champion jumping competition for the solid silver thirty-guinea rose bowl, presented by Mr D. Noake and the General Committee, and £25. This class drew no less than twenty entrants, the leaping being uf a very high order. The judge made some very favourable comments on the winner, Mr J. H. McNiven's Pickpocket, which was ridden by Mr H. Hassall. This well-known horsa accomplished quite an exceptional leap at the water jump, the distance being 31 feet 6 inches. The leaping capabilities of Mr Rupert Morrison's Greydawn, ridden by Mr B. Vallance, were also greatly admired, and his win for second place
was a popular one. Following are . details of the judging * HORSES. Thoroughbreds. Stallion, 4 years and upwards: C. McCullough's Conqueror 1 and ch, W Corlett's Boris 2. Hacks and Harness,
