FLOUR DUTY ABOLITION BILL.
SECOND READING NEGATIVED,
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 28. In the House of Representatives, this evenine. Mr A. W. Hogs:, Masterton, in moving the second reading of the Flour. Duty Abolition Bill, said that when the Bill was last before the House it was nearly carried, and he hoped with the altered personnel of the House it would be carried now. The tax on flour was an anomaly in a ci\;lised country, the j workers had a hard enough struggle to make ends meet without having their food taxed. The duties on the ' articles of daily consumption ought |to be aboliahed in the interest of the men v who are creating the wealth of the country. The flour duty went into the pockets of the "fat man," not into the State Exchequerl Since the flour trust was formed it had taken from the pockets of the people millions of money. The tax had one result, viz., the flour ting. Its abolition would benefit the farm • ers who ffclt the burden of it. No one else havingrisen to question it the seconu reading was put to the vote, and negatived by 37 votes to 21, the division list being:—Ayes: Arnold, Buick, Clark, Colvin, Davey, Dillon, Dive, Glover, Hall, Mine, Hogan, Hogg, Laurenson, McLaren, Malcolm, Okey, Poole, Sidey, T. E. Taylor, Wilford, Wright. Noes: Anderson, Ballard, Buddo, Buxton, Carroll, T. Duncan, J. Duncan, Field, Forbes, Fowlds, Fraser, Graham, Greeoslade, Guthrie, Hardy, Herdman, Herries, Lang, Luke, MatDonald, R. McKenzie, T. Mackenzie, Massey, Newman, Nosworthy, Pa. rata, Pearce, Phillips, Rhodes, Scott, Smith, Stallworthy, Steward, Rangihiroa, J. C. Thomson, Ward. Witty.
