The death is announced of Mr Vk m Archer, of Woodvjlle. i Mr S C. Ivens, who has been rab- ( ■bit agent in the South Wairarapa, Jhtß been appointed Inspector of Raboits and Noxious Weeds. His head quarters will be at Carterton. Mr J. C. Cooper (President) and Mr J. A Walsh (Secretary) of the Pahiatqa-Akitio A. and F. Society, were Visitors to the Carterton Show yesterday in the interests of their Association. Mrs Mackay, wife of Mr John Mackay, Government Printer, died at the residence in Brougham street yesterday. The deceased lady had been in delicate health for a considerable time, and for six months before her death was confined to the Ibouse. . Mr Robert Mackay, of the WNew Zealand Insurance Company's staff in Nelsop, is her only son. „ The Commissioner of Crowh Lands in Wellington,' Wlr Jamea M'Kenzie, ' announced at yesterday's meeting of the Land Board that Mr C. J. Canton had resigned his position as a member of the board, owing to private business making it impossible for him to attend the next few meetings. The commissioner spoke highly ot Mr Canton's services as a member of the boarcl, and at his suggestion it was decided to place on record the board's appreciation of the manner in which the retiring t member had discharged his public .* duties.

The friends of Miag .T. punter (daughter of Mr John Hunter) entertained her at a social gathflring in tf %he Dominion Hall, last evening, f Wp'pritir'to her departure to Wellington. Games, etc., were indulged in during the e\ening, interspersed with songs* recitations and a dialogue. Speeches were made by the Rev. A. Hodge and Mr A. Webb, , who paid a tribute to the sterling dualities of Miss Hunter. While regretting her removal to Wellington, It was some compensation to know that she was going to fill a responr Bible position. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. The gathering ending by singing "Auld Lang Syne." after which three cheers was given for Miss Hunter.
