BERESFORD AND THE ADMIRALTY.
LONG CORRESPONDENCE.
ACCUSATIONS AND REPUDIATIONS
Received October 26, 12.5 a.m. LONDON, October 25,
Lord Beresford publishes long correspondence with Mr H. H. Asquith (Prime Minister) protesting against the Admiralty's treatment of officers who had given evidence at tne naval enquiry, and cited the cases ol Rear-Ad niral Sturdio and Captains Hulbert and Campbell, accusing the Admiralty of extemporising the reorganisation involving a change in the' personnel with a view to ridding the Admiralty staff of his supporters. Lord Beresford adds that five captains declined to act as his chief staff officer in 1907 because they feared that acceptance of the position prejudice their future careers.
Mr in replying, encloses the Admiralty's memorandum, alleging the necessity for reorganisation of the Naval Intelligence Department, which caused Captains Hulbert and Campbell to be placed on half pay.
Mr Asquith states that he can trace no breach of tiie undertaking that no officer' s career should be prejudiced owing to giving evidence at the enquiry.
