THE KEEPER OF VESUVIUS.
"Dr V. R. Matteucci, who has just died at Naples, was," says the West minster," "reported to have met his death three years ago under very horrible circumstances. Besides being Professor of Geology in the University of Naples, Dr Matteucci wa9 also director of the Mount Vesuvius Observatory, which is situated on the volcano, between the Monte Somma and the main crater. Whan the great eruntion took place in April, 1906, th 3 courageous Director refused to leave the observatory, and remained at his post calmly making valuanle scientific observa- \ tions while gr 'at streams of lava were encirclinc: the building and burning ashes falling all around it. At one time the observatory was said to have been overwhelmed; it was hidden in clouds of smoke, and everyone gave Dr Matteuc i up for lost. But, fortunately, the place escaped destruction."
