A FATAL FIRE.
BOARDER OVERCOME Bsf SMOKE,

Another fatal fire occurred early this morning, the victim being Thomas Ker, a single man aged about thirty. The fire occurred at West - court, a large boarding house formerly known as the Occidental Hotel, which lost its lict tfhen reduction was carried nine years ago. The flames had obtained a strong hold when discoverad by the proprietor of the house, Mr Richardson, who went round and roused the inmates.
It was thought all had escaped, but when the fire had been got under Ker's body was found on the floor of his bedroom. He had apparently been overcome by smoke.
The deceased was well known in rowing circles, and was a native of Christchurch,
The' Building tims owned by Mr P. Gleeson, and insured.. Id the Norwich Union for £1,200. the contents for £750 in the Australian Alliance. The upper storey of the building was gutted.
