NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By "Zetland,") The withdrawal of Rawhetu left four to go to the post for the Hurdle Handicap, of one mile and.threequarters. Wirrall, once again, was made a firm favourite. He took command early in the race and led for a mile and a quarter, where Martyrium joined him. The latter fell back at the half-mile post, where Waipunehu, who had beai jumping badly, moved up. He caught Wirrall at the last hurdle, and beat him home by a head in a good finish.- The winner was well handled by H. Cairns, who returned the day before from his trip to Australia. For the RimutakaaHack, Dreadless was backed as if the race was all over. Celaeno was first to break the line, but was quickly deposed by Kina, who stayed in front to t}ie end, winning by' half a length fnjm the fast finishing Rose Herald, with the favourite a closi third. A fine field ot twelve sprinters went to the post for the Shorts Handicap. Penates and Gipsy Belle were the popular selections. Si-. Bill was first out, and led to fie turn accompanied by Naumai. When heads were turned for' home, Penates came through, and easily holding his own won, easing up, by two lengths from Gold Thread
the Wellington Handicap brought out a field of ten of the best handi cap horses in the Dominion. Elysian.. winner of the] Hawke's Bay Guineas, was made a pronounced favourite, while Sir Tristram, Aberbrothock, Flitaway, and King Post, were also well supported. ' Elysian and Muskerry led out of the straight and'going along the order of the leaders were King Post, Muskerry and Moloch. At the far turn All Red, Sir Tristram and Aberbrothock improved their positions, and the firstnamed led into the straight. A most exciting finish resulted in All Red beating Sir Tristram by a short head, with Aberbrothock half a length away third, and Elysian fourth. The owner, who is top weight in the New Zealand Cup, was loudly cheered on returning to the enclosure. In ihe Selling Plate Merchantman and Uyrene cut out the running to the straight,, where the firatnamed forged slightly to the front. in earing the post, LucretiUß put in a fast iun p but suffered a half length defeat by 'Merchantman. The winner was sold by auction for 75 guineas. Mr R. W. Paterson being the purchaser.
Quality was [especially well represented in the Wellesley Stakes, eleven high-class two-year olds being sent out for the contest. The public backed the bracketed pair, Kohinoorjand War Song, very spiritedly, while Formby was also well fancied. The latter was first to show out, and closely attended by Kohinoor led in"to the straight. The pair looked like fighting out the finish, but King Soult put m a fast run, and divided the pair. The Wairarapa repiesentatives in this race were Mr F. Dor* set's Sir Solo, Mr W. E.' Bidwill's Insp :ction, and Mr G. Hume's Kil+ laloe.
