"SIMPLE LIFE" FAILS.
Like others before it the "simple life" colony founded about six years ago by Herr Acdehkowen-Hofmann has proved a failure, and the whole of the buildings and fittings are advertised for sale (says a London paper). The colony, which was situated on what was called "Monte Verita" at Ascona.J on Lake Maggiore, was started with a great flourish of trumpets. Most of these weird ideas appeal to women, and the colony was no exception. Many ladies of title joined, and for a time revelled in the novelty of walking about in a kind of loose white sack, their hair down and feet bare, and living on wild fruits and vegetables. Many sold their jewels and gave the results to a common fund for the advancement of the colony. Of course, there were many male members, but they are, nothing nearly so numerous as the females. They wore flowing robes, and one of their rules forbade them to cut their hair. So that in a short time they presented curious spectacles. The novelty of the thing wore off, the original members began to drop off, no one came to take their places, f.n 1 so the end came.
