OBITUARY.

"ONZE JAN."

Received October 18, 9 a.m. LONDON, October 17.

The Hon. Jan. H. Hofmeyr, died suddenly of angina pectoris, at Whitehall Court, after undergoing a "cure" in Germany. The body has been embalmed, and will be interred in Cape Colony,

Mr Hofmeyr was born in 1845, and educated at the South African College, Capetown. He represented Cape Colony at the Ottawa Conference with Sir Henry de Vilhers and Sir Charles Mills; represented Cape Colony, and, with Sir Charles Mills and Sir Thomas Uppington, proposes a scheme of Imperial Customs Federation at a conference in London; and a member of the South African Customs Union Conference in 1888 and 1889; negotiated the Swazilan Convention with the Transvaal in 1890* and was deputed by the Cape Govern, merit to Bloemfontein and Pretoria - inJuly.lß99, to obtain a franchise aod other concessions in order to pre- A vent hostilities between the South African Republics and Britain. An ex-journnlist, Mr Holmeyr, who played a very prominent part in South African affairs, was a member of the, Executive Council of Cape Colony, Chairman of the Africander Bond of the Cape district, and chairman of the Central Committeu of the Bond o.i elections. He was twice married. For some years Mr Cecil Rhodes found the late Mr Hofmeyr a staunch ally, but after the Jameson Raid he broke with Mr Rhodes, aijd in thfc elections of 1898, as wirepuller of the Bond Caucus, was a'c- ~ tive in his ooposition \o him. At one, time Mr Hofmeyr advocated total separation of South Africa from England. '
