Saturday. FARMERS' UNION. A meeting of the Executive of the Pahiatua Central Branch of the New Zealand Farmers" Onion was held in the secretary's office this afternoun. Present,-*-Messrs J. C. Cooper (chairman), Tfaos. Quirk, A. Ross, J. Brechin, atrd P. Neilsen.
Correspondence was received from the Wellington Meat Export Company and Thos. Borthwick and Sons, in answer to inquiries made by the aacietary regariing the price and rebate allowed to members of the Union, when purchasing their manures through the local branch. The companies allowed 10 par cent, rebate, which the meeting decided to allocate as follows 7 per cent, to the farmers and 3 per cant, to the secretary for his trouble. Mr H. B. Lethbridge wrote suggesting a demonstration on woolctasbing, and the secretary was instructed to make inquiries in connection therewith.
A letter from the secretory of the District High School Committee asking for monetary towards the agricultural classes at the school, waa received, the feeling being expressed that the matter would receive consideration, when tha branch was in a better financial
position. The Branch, in conjunction with the A, and P. Association, decided retain the telephone. The secretary ireportad th t a considerable amount of business bad been transacted in crnsection with the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance. GENERAL. The largest supplier to the Konini batter factory Is Mr Thomas Quirk, who iB delivering -2,7001bs ot milk daily. Much adverse comment has been, caused locally atttie proposed alteration to the railwav timetable. About a fortnight ago several settlers on the Ridge Road, Konini, had about fifty sheep either killed or badly bitten about by two dogs. Sheepworrying ia also going on . at .Nikau. One settler lost eight sheep on Saturday last, and six on Wednesday, besides having fully thirty badly bitten. Mr and Mrs P. Dabreceny returned last evening from a pleasant holiday trip to Australia. Mr Ming, of Ballance, had a lucky escape from what might have been a serious accident this morning While driving to the factory Jiis Inrae shied,at a package left on the roadside, with the result that the harse, vehicle and driver went over the bank into the creek. Mr Ming was underneath the cart, but managed to crawl out of the back. Luckily very little damage was done.
A farewell social te tcf be tendered to Mr and Mrs D. Pitcaithly in the Bongomai Scboolhouse on Friday evening next. Mr C. R. Mitchell, who has been rather seriously ill during the past week, was reported to be improving this morning.
At ttie Mart this afternoon there waa a good entry of pigs, which sold at the following prices: Weaaera, 9a to lis 63; slip 3 17s; stores, 14s ifid to 275. Mrs W. Tosswill, who has been very seriously ill for some weeks, 13 now making rapid steps towards recovery.
The first general meeting of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association was held yesterday. The ca.ivaasers' Hats gave a total of 400 members to date. Mr J. Armstrong was elected president, and Messrs Rose and Kftthbone vice-presidents. STOCK MARKET. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report on their monthly sale, held'in their yards at Pongaroa yesterday:— Entries in sheep comprised hoggets, which showed a considerable advance in prices. A good yarding of cattle came forward, prices being well maintained, and bidding was brisk -throughout. We quote:—Sheep: Mixed hoggets, 9s 9d to 12s 6d; wether hoggeta, 13s 4d; cull'hoggets, 5s 4d. Cattle.—Yearling heifers, £1 19a to £2 3s; 2yr, heifers, £2 53 to £2 10a; yearling steers, <£2 8s; 2yr steers, £2 19a 6d to £3 12a 6d ; 3yr steers, £4 2a (>d to £4-19s 6d; springing haifers, £3, £3 7s to £4 15s; dairy cows, £3 8a to £5 sj; bul 1, £ 1 14s.
