Wednesday. ™ The New Zealand ensign flying from the Post Office tower, and closed doors at the premises that come under the Factory Act, was the only sign of Labour Day in Carterton to-day. The school buildings here are shortly to be repainted. Miss Bodall, the recently appointed assistant teacher at the Belvedere School, has commenced har duties. Scholarship and civil service examinations are to be held here in November and December. The Rev. W. J. Elliott has been appointed supervisor. The final in the United Friendly Societies' card tourney was played last evening, when the Foresters defeated the Oddfellows by the margin of four games, the scores being 29 to 33, The Friendly Societies' Council met last evening, Bro. J. M. Nicholls presiding. The Masterton Council wrote in regard to a combined picnic for Boxing Day, and it was decided to fall in with the idea, and to suggest Pigeon Bush as the site for the same. In reference t~s the sports balance, it was decided to recommend the Lodges to sanction the proposal to form it into a benevolent fund,-and assist deserving cases that may be sent to a hospital, no member to receive mora than £o. About forty couples "tripped the light fantastic" at Victoria Hall last evening, when the annual social of the Carterton Football Club wa3 held The floor was in beautiful order, and first-cla°s music was played by Messrs R. Crawley (piano) and Fl. Hall (cornet). Misa Wilde contributed an extra. Messrs N. McKenzie, F. Groube, and J. McfJuinness were M.'sC. Mr C. Reid, president of the c lub, during the evening presented Mr W. M. Halley's medals for the best forward and best back in the senior team to Messrs A. Desmond and N. McKenzie, respectively.
