MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.
A VOLUNTEER KILLED. By Telegraph—Press Asscoiation. CHRISTCHURCH, October 13. When the Volunteors were returning from manoeuvres this afternoon in motor cars provided, and in many cases driven by owners, an accident ocurred near the Riccartun Hotel whereby William Oatell Pavitt, Officer Commanding the Civil Service Rifles, was killed. The car was owned and driven by Wm. A. Humphreys, and there were also with him Lieut. Matthews, Civil Service, Lieut. Guthrie, Canterbury Highlanders, and Captain Salter, Adjutant of the Second North Canterbury Infantry Battalion. The car was travelling at a fair speed round a curve between the Parks bardering the Riccarton road, when the steering gear went wrong, with the result that the car collided with a tramway pole on the side of the road. The car bounded off the pole on to the road, collided with the next pole and was overturned. The occupants were thrown out on to the roadway, Pavitt being killed almost instantaneously. The other occupants escaped with a severe shaking. The car was completely wrecked. Lieut. Guthrie received a severe injury to his leg, Lieut. Matthews was slightly cut about the hand, and the other occupants were uninjured. Lieut. Pavitt was a clerk in the office (if the North Canterbury Education Board and was unmarried.
