MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon There were present, —Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), R F. R. Beetham, J Colquhoun. J. Morris junr., and H. 0. Toogood.

The secretary of the MastertonWaipukurau Railway League wrote stating that at the last meeting of their Executive Committee it was resolved thot a deputation wait on the Minister for Public Works about October 20th. The League desired the Council to appoint a delegate to represent the Council at the deputation. The letter was received.

The Pahiatua Borough Council wrote asking for information with regard to the contributions to the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board for the maintenance of the Victoria Home. They asked if a further legal opinion had been taken on tht question, and what the Masterton County were doing in reference to the matter. It was decided to inform the Council that She amount was being paid in full on the understanding that if it were subsequently found that they were not legally liable the amount be refunded.. The Treasury wrote advisine: the Council of the remittance of £I,OOO loan for Alfredton-Weber Road metalling.

Messrs J. and A. Welch, Opaki, wrote asking for the termination of the agreement with the Council in regard to the lease of the County gravel reserve adjoining their property

It was decided that after the expiration oi the present lease, that the Council take steps to acquire a right-of-way to tne reserve. Mr E. Hale, Te Pre Ore, wrote informing the Council that the water service pipe to his property had been wrongly connected. Mr Laing-Meason said that the custom of the Clerk of Works was to make enquiries' from the property owners before making the water connections. He would, however, look into the matter.

Mrs Puhara Te Tau, Lansdowne, wrote, objecting tc being rated for water, as neither the high pressure nor the irrigation water reached her property.—The letter was referred to the Engineer in charge of the scheme.

The Maurice«ille County Council wrote agreeing to share equally in the cost of prospecting for metal in Brown's pit.—On the motion of the chairman, the matter was referred to the representatives of the Alfredton Riding, with power to act.

Mr J. Daley, Lansdowne, wrote stating that the water from L-ans downe main drain was damaging

his property. The matter was referred to Mr Laing-Meason to deal with. Mr G. 0. Donovan, Kopuaranga, wrote stating that all the wood he had had removed through Mr J. McGrath's road was about six cords in the past twelve months. He disclaimed any responsibility for the

mad being cut up. Mr Tai Te Tan wrote asking to have his property at Lansdowne connected with high pressure water

supply. The application was held in abeyance. Mr F. Fabian wrote claiming £5 damages for an accident arising out of a defective culvert on Te Ore Ore Road.

The matter was referred to the Engineer and the representative of the Riding to report to the Council at next meeting. Mr J. Andrew waited on the Council in support of a letter asking why he had not been allowed to re-

move the posts cut by him on the i Weraiti-Femyhurst Road. ■ After discussion it was decided that I the timber must be left on the road. ! g The question of compensation for ; I cutting the posts was left in the hand ' of the Engineer and Cr Beetham and i Toogood, the representatives of the j Riding. | On the motion of Cr Beetham, sec- j onded by Cr Toogood, it was resolved

that a letter be written -to Mrs Russell asking if she has any objection to the Council taking metal from the pit from opposite the Te Parae stock yards, and also if she will grant permission for a face to be opened up in front of the pit, Messrs A. H. Wrightson, W. H Buick, V. Donald and W. H. Cruick- ! shank, representing the committee of the managing ratepayers of the , Lansdowne-Opaki water scherre, waited on the Council and stated they had decided to recommend Mr J. H. Townsley to the position of care-

taker of the schemes. The recommendation of the com-1 mittee was adopted by the Council. Mr Wrightson asked how the time j spent by the caretaker on each scheme i would be apportioned. The chairman stated that the | usual custom was for the caretaker ' to keep a diary of the time spent on each scheme, which would no doubt be done in the present case.
