A new Court of tlio Ancient Order of Foresters is to be opsned at Hamua, and in this connection a function is to be held in Eketahuna on Tuesday evening. About twenty members from Court Pahiatua intend being present, and I understand that the District Officers from Wellington will also be present. The Programme Committee of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society met on Saturday evening, to arrange the programme for the annual sports on
Boxing Day. Word was received in Pahiatua this morning that Mr Frank Bur> ling of Glencoe, had been drowned yesterday, whilst crossing the Akitio Kiver. The deceased was well-known in the Pongaroa district, and was a grandson of Mr Burling who for many years resided at Waterfalls. Messrs W. and K. Burling, of "Woodlands," Pongaroa, are, J understand, brothers of the deceased. No further particulars are yet to hand regarding the sad occurrence.
A match between the Palmerston North and the Pahiatua Gun Club will be fired on Wtdnesday afternoon next, on the local ground. The annual meeting uf the Pahiatua Club will be held in the evening. There was a fair attendance at the strangers' tea held in St, Paul's Presbyterian Sunday Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. It was decider! to draw up a syllabus for the season at the next tea. In the evening, in the church, the Rev. Mills delivered an address to men, taking his text from Ist Corinthians 9 ch. 26 verse. The speaker announced that Sunday next was the day set apart by the General Assembly as "Young People's Day," and in the morning there would be special singing by the children, and a special hymn ssrvice would be held in the evening. The collections next Sabbath will be devoted to the "Youth Fund." Mr C. A. Bluetc is making extensive alterations to a shop opposite the Bank of New Zealand. The present season so lar has been a splendid one for the dairy farmers in this district, and dairy
cdvvs are in better condition this year than has been the case generally in previous years. At every factory this season, more milk is being received daily than has been delivered in former years at the same period. At the Ballance butter factory about 1,800 gallons 13 the daily supply, but every day there is an increase in the quantity. At the Mangatainoka cheese factory, on Saturday morning, 1,836 gallons was supplied, and the proprietor informs me that the output for September this year was just double that of September, 1908. Should the price of cheese and butter keep at a reasonable figure during this season, a very large amount of money will be distributed throughout this district. GOLF. The golf season han been brought to a dose and during the past few months considerable enthusiasm has been shown by the members, more competitions for trophies having been played than ever before. The club started the season a month later than usual. During the season, Mias Eileen Warren won the President's and Mr J. Osburn-Lilly's trophies and Miss Ray HugHes, Mr T. P. Wills' trophy. In the men's competitions Mr J G. Swainson won three trophies, Mr G. Haroi.l Smith two, Mr H. McSherry two, and Mr T. P. Wills one. The new links on the racecourse gave every satisfaction.
