TORTURED TO DEATH
BU HAMARA'S FATE. THROW TO LIONS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright, Received October 11, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, October 10. The Fez correspondent of the "Daily Mail" 9tates that Bu Hamara.. the Moorish Pretender, who was captured by the Sultan's troops, was not shot, as at first reported, but his feet were chained, and he was thrown into a garden where there were three starved lions Bu Hamara tried to climb a tree, but a lioness tore off his left arm. Soldiers then stabbed him in the breast a dozen times. The lions, returning, toyed with the body as cats with a mouse. The Sultan and his court watched the killing of the victim from the windows of the palace.
Omar Zarahimi, better known as "Bu Hamara," who had been in a more or less active state of rebellion since 1892, was captured in August in a mosque in the Beni-Masra country. He was carried into Fez in an iron cage strapped on the back of a came!, the sight attracting the attention of large crowds, who loudly jeered him as he passed along. In return, trio prisoner boldly flung suits at tiie assembled populace. The cage was deposited in the palace courtyard, where the Sultan interviewed the prisoner through the bars. The Pretender was sen ■ tenced to be caged till his death, but it was afterwards reported that, in consequence of a strong protest from the representatives of foreign Powers, he was removed from the cage. A later message stated that he had been shot.
