SOLWAY SHOWGROUND EXPENSES.
A SCHEME FOR RAISING MONEY. HUGE STOCK FAIR TO BE ! IIELE. A short time ago Mr W. B. Allen, J of Clareville, brought under the | notice of the iviasterton A. and l'. Association a suggestion which he j considered would be of great assist- I ance to the institution in view of , the heavy expenditure that would be ' involved in the early removal to Solway. The scheme was that lists j should be opened whereby members j should agree to contribute a stated j sum for four years, and Mr Allen . backed up his proposal with a dona- j tion of a twenty guinea Stud Rom- \ ney ram to be sold at the next Ram Fair. The suggestion which had already ' been adopted by the Association I came up for discussion at the inept ' in* of the General Committee last , Saturday afternoon. ' Mr Cooper said that the circulars had been sent out as requested. It wab necessary that a systematic canvass should bff instituted in the direction indicated. He had approached several in regard to the matter, but had not met with good results as yet, ; which, considering the stringency ' in the money market, was to be expected to a certain extent. The scheme did not apply to those whc , had already subscribed so generously, I but these were limited to a few compared to the membership of the Association. Mr Allen had pointed out if his scheme were taken up . heartily it would mean a substantial revenue to the Association. | Mr W. J. Welch favoured the suggestion but thought a certain amount of discreet was necessary on the part of the committee. A number of them Jhad subscribed liberal y and he did not think they should be asked for further donations. | Mr Strang said he agreed with the previous speaker, but at the i same time he was sure that out of their big membership about one hundred could be fund who would be only too willing to give £5 each. Mr J. C. McKillop said that perhaps some of them would be willing to give sheep, as Mr Allen had done. Mr D. McGregor junr. said that he was in favour of making a general scheme among farmers to give stock cf any description towards the project. He thought it would be a great success, and would probably be a more effective scheme for raising money.
Mr J. C. McKillop warmly supported the idea, and intimated that a purebred Southdown ram would be his contribution towards it. The matter was further discussed, the members generally agreeing that a stock fair would be a great success, and that farmers would contri- j bute stock most willingly. The chairman, Mr H. Morrison, moved that a stock fair be held about Show time, the proceeds to go towards the deduction of the debt on tiolway grounds, and that the three stock auctioneering firms be asked to conduct the sale. This was carried unanimously. Messrs J. C. McKillop, J. Strang, W. Perry, D. McGregor, junr., H. Morrison, Q. Donald, W. E. Bidwill, and H. A. Matthews were appointed a committee to deal with the matter of the scheme.
