The Chief Justice of Samoa has returned from a visit to the East. While in China be engaged five hundred Chinese to work in the German Island plantations, to replace the island labourers who have lately been giving trouble. Speaking of affairs in the East, the Chief Justice said he was convinced that the awakening of China was perfectly real', the motive being a powerful patriotism, which spreads right through the people He believes that this patriotic feeling will create both an army and a navy large enough or their own defence, but thinks there is no fear that these will be used aggressively. He does rot believe that China will oe au aggressive Power in the Pacific,
