MORE RETRENCHMENT.
VeryJittle tact seems-to have been usediin connection with recent Civil Service retrenchments, says the "Manawaiu Evening Standard." Travelling allowances have been cut tdowii, and the annua! leave df men in the higher branches of the service ihas been curtailed by a week. In most cases very ilittle complaint has been heard, Civil serv ants recognising that with other branches of the public service they must each duffer a little in the general reorganisation and pruning that has been rendered necessary by the extravagant methods of the past. The majority of those affected were prepared to cheerful acquiesce tin the action that had to be taken. The time chosen to put tie new regulation into force has, however, much discontent and indignation. (The retrenchments take effect from (October Ist. Many of the men have already had their leave under the oldangulations, but those others who are entitled to a holiday this year feel aggrieved that while their comrades Save had the full period their leave is to be abbreviated. , It would have bee# much fairer if the new regulations wsre made to apply from the beginning of the year.
