TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.") Tha Lower Valley. Jockey Club meet - ing being practically the first of the Beason in this district, a number of new aspirants to racing honours were seen out, while in two cases previous flat racers were seen out over hurd • les. Among others the meeting served to introduce Soprano, a nice stamp of a tilly by MenschikoffGissy. Very aristocratic breeding this, and Soprano may be expected in due course to take in higher class company. Ngaparua, by Knight Erraht-Agnes, a Maaden Candidate, is a well grown mare with a fair turn .!"of speed. She got away very badly, but made up lost ground, and may be seen to better advantage at the Masterton meeting, Magneto, by Merriwee-The Brook, isa well grown filly, formed on galloping lines. She «Is owned by the Wellington man, Mr"Middleton MeJroae;,'" and won. the Hack Scurry very easily. Fighting Maid by, Saracen-Field Piece, ran very creditably in the Qtaraia Hack. She has only been in work a few weeks, and in a couple of months should be much improved in condition. The peculiarly named Conqueror gelding, Comethup, isa fine big commanding animal. When ready he should be a galloper worthy of his breeding, and has the appearance of being a likely jumper. The somewhat heavy going at Mar •
tinborough did not suit Skye orj Aberration. Both refused tto do their: best on either day. Epsom Downs, | \vho started in the Maiden on the first , day, and Necklace on the second,. showed galloping ability for the: greater part of the distartces, but had not been up long enough to fight out the contests. He will do better later, on. Waiwareware, who is very well; just now, made her first apearanco in open country in the Martin Memorial. Half way down the straight she look ■ ed like making a race of tit, butfaded: out of it just too soon. Lucretius, who made her first appearance over; hurdles, jumped well on the second day, and Jed the field for-half a mile.: With more schooling work she should improve on faer Martiriborough-efforts.. The successful riders -at the meeting were:—W. Young, iour; C. : Cress, three; H Kirk, two; F #l Cress, N« McDonald, J. Hercock, R. Hatch, T. Carroll, Mr R. McDougatl. and Mr A. Best* on'e win each. Merrie Christmas has been purchased by a Wellington sportsman, ! and is intended for pony racing. The I price paid was 60 guineas. The Press Asfluciabion -report of the Lower Valley meeting wrongly included Merrie Chimes among tne starters at the meebing. This filly has not yet been seen out under-silk. Nominations for the Masterton meeting close on Friday. A good I reponse on the part of owner and [ trainers is expected.
