TRIAL BY JURY.
The Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society have chosen for their initial performance Gilbert and Sullivan's well known dramatic cantata "Trial by Jury." The first portion of the programme will be devoted to a spectacular, extravaganza entitled "Music on the' Lawn." The stage setting w'U represent a garden party scene, and everything will be tastefully arranged, special Jight-i-g effects being introduced. Musical items, including songs with full harmonical chorus, solos and duets will be distributed throughout th2 programme. Mrs H. J. Francis will sing "Somebody That I Know." Miss M. Cameron "Pansv Faces " Mr J. Gray "My Little YoSan," Miss D. Cook and G. Ewart, "Dainty Dorothea (in costume,) Mr F. H. Elcoate "My Home is Far Away" (in costume and with effects). The comedy work is left to Messrs H. Hall and D. Walsh, who will sing "It Must be Me/' and earlier Mr Hall will give a clever and amusing item "I'm Here if I'm Wanted," and will be assisted by Miss M. Baxter. Another amusing and novel item Will be "Johnnie Schmokfr" (as a quartette by Messrs K. J. Francis, W. S. Jago, C. Paul and W. Iggulden). The first part.will conclude with a comedy sketch entitled "The Rehearsal." The characters will be sustained by Miss R. Carr as "She," Mr G. Branson "He," and Mr F. H. Elcoate "It." The second portion of the programme will be devoted to "Trial by Jury." This cantata is very well known. It was first played at the new Royalty Theatre (London) on Thursday, March 25th, 1875, was revived in 1884, and again in 1898 st the Savoy Theatre on both occasions. The cantata bristles with bright catchy music with some beautiful chorus work. "The opening chorus" "A Nice Dilemma," "All Hail Great Judge," and the finale being exceptionally fine numbers. The "Bridesmaid's" chorus is a delightful piece of music. Amongst the solo work "Tink a lank" (Mr Jago,)"The Plaintiff's) Song (Miss JHgo), "counsel's Song" (Mr Cook), "Usher's Song" (Mr Iggulden), are all splendid numbers. Mr H. Hall as the "Learned Judge" has the comedy work, and his song "How he Came to be a Judge" ought to be greatly enjoyed. A well-balanced oichestra, consisting of fourteen members, will supply the music. The box plan is now open at Messrs Inns and Goddard, stationers.
