PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar Resident Reporter). Thursday. Mr and Mrs Thos. Quirke arrived home this afternoon from a trip to Auckland and Rotorua. Mi J. A. Renall, a one-time wellknown resilient of the W and now of Auckland, passed through Pahiatua this afternoon en route for Masterton. The quarterly meeting of the local Lodge of Oddfellows was held at Mangatainoka last evening, Bru. W. Taylor. N.G., presiding. Two new members were initiated and one proposed for membership. Ordinary quartely business was transacted, and i* was shown that Ihe Lodge was in a very sour.d financial position. Much enthusiasm is being displayed in the affairs of the Lodge by mem ■ tiers generally. Milk tor the first time was supplied to-day to the new cheese fac • tory at Mangamaire. The secretary informed me this afternoon xhat a little under 1,000 gallons was delivered. 1 understand that the factory will be formally opened in about a fortnight' time. At the annual meeting of the Woodville Bowling Cluo, Mr S. Bolton was elected president, and vu-s.s s McKibbon and Gitbard vice-presi-dentd. Over thirty persons have ijauded in their names as members, and the green which is in good order -will be ready for playing on next week. There was a guod attendance at the Huia (ladies) hockey ball, hald in the Olympic Theatre, last evening. Special attention had been paid to the floors and the hall was decorated with evergreens. Good dance music was supplied by Mr C. Mills, extras being played by Mrs East -wood, and Misses Mack, Godso and Cox. A very dainty supper was laid out and the secretaries (Misses Oxley and Spillane) deserve great credit for the manner in which they carried out their duties. Mr F. Smith made a capabie M.G. Although there were several counter attractions last evening, there was a fair attendance at the social and dance in the Scarborough School house in aid of the school funds. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, and good music was supplied by Messrs Bluett's string band. During the evening Miss Tulloch and Messrs J. Vosper and Cloueh rendered vocal items. Mr J. Wilds was an efficient M.C. The poster skating carnival to tie held in the Drill Hall on Wednesday next promises to be a great success. Tha Pahiatua Brass Band will render selections and refreshments will be provided. A prize will be given for the most original fancy costume. VALEDICTORY. The largest gathering of settlers ever seen at Makomako congregated at the Schoolhouse, last evening, when a farewell concert and dance was held, and a presentation made to Mr W. Phillip, who after ten years as headmaster of the Makomako School, has been appointed to a similar position at theTaitai School. The popularity of Mr Phillip as a teacher was shown by the record number present, some coming a distance of twenty miles. Mr J. Thomas, headmaster of the Pahiatua District High School, paid a high tribute to Mr Phillip's abilities as a teacher, he having served five years under him (the .speaker) at Pahiatua. Mr A. Eddie, who made an excellent chairman, also made eulogistic reference to the manner in which Mr Phillip had conducted his schct I, and pre .sented him with a very handsome illuminated address. On behalf of the papils attending the school, Miss Ella Walsh also handed to Mr Phillip a silver mounted pocket wallet. Mr Phillip, in replying, thanked those present for the kind words expressed, and "although a very pleasant evening was being spent, yet he felt a little lump of lead iii his heart, and only a man who had been teaching in the one district for ten years knew how dear children became to him." A programme of vocal and musical items which would do credit to a town programme, was contributed to by the following ladies and gentlemen: — Misses Hickson. Miller, fiarry, Ebbett and Walsh, and Messrs Wells, H. Watts (Scotch dance), J. A. Boagey, Hawkins, Ebbett (3), Brooker, C. N. Watts, Pitt, Downard, A. Moore, A. Sowry, H. Thomson, and Scott. Mr Boagey played the accompaniments At the conclusion of the programme a hearty vote of

thanks was accorded to the secre-j tary of the social committee, Mr; Frank Ebbett. Refreshments were' then handed round. The school was; then cleared for dancing, which was kept going until a late hour..
