John Lax, vicar of Stainmore, in Westmoreland, and his schoolmistress. The men bound, gagged and tarred him, and read a mock service over him. Subsequently eight ■ young parishioners were arrested, convicted of the offence, and fined five pounds each. The cross-examination showed that the vicar, who was a married man, had suggested certain relations with the schoolmistress.
