USE OF THE PARK OVAL.
APPLICATION BY CALEDONIANSOCIETY.
The submitting of the following recommendation from the Gas, Park and Library Committee, to the Council for their adoption, last evening, provoked a certain amount of discussion among councillors:~ "A communication was'submitted from the Wairarapa Caledonian Soci3ty.asking for the use of the Park on'tbelstof January next, and enquiring the terms and otherwise. The Committee recommend that the Society be permitted to have the sole use of the Public Park on the date mentioned, with the right to charge for admission thereinto, not exeeding that appointed by Statute, together with the Park Lake and the Tea Kiosk.subject to a payment therefor of sum of £2O, together with a deposit of £lO, such deposit to be held against restoration of the grounds to the satisfaction of the Borough Council.", * Cr Hoar considered that £2O was an excessive charge to impos6 on the Caledonian Society, and [he moved that the amount| be reduced to £lO. This was seconded by Cr Morris. Cr Temple referred to the additional advantages the Lake gave to the Park. Cr Ewington contended that the charge was a fair one. The fixture was held on practically the best day in the year, and, moreover, the Park was in fr.r better order than it had ever been previously. Cr Hoar said they had no right to over-charge the Society, and £2O was an ovej* charge. , The Mayor said the question should be viewed as a business matter apart from sentiment. If the Park was worth £2O then the Society should not object to pay. Cr Pauling said that as a member and a director of the Society he thought £2O was far too high, and further he was of opinion that the offer would not be accepted. Certainly he would not recommend them to pay that price. Again, a fence would have to be erected around the Oval before it could be used. He was given to understand that no Society in the Dominion paid higher prize money than the Wairarapa one. Cr Elliott considered the price a fair one in view of the fact tiat numbers of people wan'iig to go into the Park on-New Year's Day could not do so for nothing if the Society held their meeting there. New Year's Day was one of the best holiday fixtures in the year, and the Park on that day was certainly worth the £2O. At this stage the Mayor said that he was quite sure the Council would grant a rebate to the Society if they made a loss over their sports. There was no further discussion on the matter, and the report was put to the meeting and alopted in its original form.
