PAHIATUA NEWS.

Tuesday. A very pleasant evening was spent at the Foresters" Hall last evening, when the members of Court Pahiatua met to bid farewell and make a small presentation to Bro. E. Clarke prior to his departure for Carterton. Singing, music, and card playing was the o:der of the evening, and the chairman (Bro. E. Darley) in a neat speech referred to the many ways in which the guest of the evening had assisted the Pahiatua Lodge, and asked him to accept a P.C.R. sash. On bahalf of the members, the chairman pi'esented Bro. Clarke with a silver mounted cigar holder, silver nio.inted cigarette holder, silver match box and a well filled silver mounted tobacco pouch, and wished the recipient health and happiness in his new sphere oi life. Bro. Clarke stated that he appreciated the kind gifts very much, and the many kind words expressed towards him would remain bright in his memory for ever. During the evening songs were well rendered by Bros. E. Clarke, F. Sedcole, H. l'earcey, P. Taylor, and Mr C. Milla, and recitations were by Brcs. T. Wilson, MQlloy, i). Stratford, t »d Mr D. Wiltcn. Mr C. Mills played .several pianoforte selections, and at the close of the gathering he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services as pianist, Light refreshments were partaken of, and the chairman thanked all thuse who had assisted with the social. Mr Alf. Snowball gave an entertaining lecture in the Methodist s Church last evening. Mr R. H. Turton, the newly-ap-pointed S.M., was welcomed this morning by Mr W. Tossvvill on behalf of the legal profession at the local Court. Ths plain and fancy dress ball that' is to be held in the Hukanui Hall on Friday evening is the wind-up of the winter dancing class. I understand that the gardens at the large residence in Wakeman street, known as Seddon Castle, are being put in order by Mr J. Spilman. The benedicts of Ballance gave a return ball to the bachelors and spinsters 011 Friday evening last, it being well attended. Vocal and instrumental items were rendered by local talent, and music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs Barry and Delahaye, ai;d Mr G„ Vile acted as M.C., and a good supply of refreshments was provided by the ladits. A meeting was held last evening by the youths interested, and a branch of the "Boy Scouts" was formed, one patrol being formed to start with, and it is hoped to form other patrols in a month's time. The meeting was very enthusiastic one, and it was decided to hold parades weekly. The road between the Borough and the Railway Station, has been receiving a coat of metal, and the footpath recently completed is much appreciated by pedestrians.
