The Hikurangi Maori College football team defeated the Clareville team on the Cartert»n reserve this afternoon by 10 points to nil. The monthly meeting of the South Wairarapa County Council was held this morning, Cr W. Perry in the chair. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £539 4s 6rJ, and accounts amounting to £293 !ls lid were passed for payment. Four cases of infections diseases were reported within the County. A communication was received from the New Zealand Counties' Association, stating that it had been thought inadvisable to hold the annual conference this year, on account of Parliament not sitting, but asked that the Council's delegate be appointed, so that if necessity arose, the conference could be quickly arranged. Cr T. V. i Moore was appointed delegate. Mr U\ G. White wrote that he was negotiating for the purchase of the lease of the Gladstone Hotel, and asked if the 'Jouncil was prepared to grant him the same concessionsj as made to present tenant. Crs Welch, Strang, 'and , the Engineer were appointed to inspect the premises before giving a "reply. The InStock drew the jCouncil's att. ntion to the noxious weeds grow ■ lng in the gravel reserves, anrig the Engineer was instructed to see that the sarre were cleared away. Application was made to have the slipsgin Craigie Lea Koad removed, and the Engineer was instructed to inspect the same, and report at the next meeting. Mr P. Kurnmer wrote asking tl.at riaraka Bay Road to put in repair, as the work would not absorb much morp than the £ls thirds which he understood had accumulated. Cr Barrer stated that he had explained to Mr Kurnmer that the work had been authorised at the last A deputation waited upon the Council in reference fo the Admiral Road, and it was decided to effect some repairs.—A deputation from the Carterton Borough Council wailed upon the Council in reference to establishing abattoirs, aid the County Council decided to as* the Borough Council to supply information as to the quantity of stock that would be treated, and what support would be likely to come from O'reytown; also whether the Borough were prepared to stand the cost the poll. The En. gineer's report was read, and several works recommended were authorised to be carried out.
The shooting competition for a trophy presented by Captain-Surgeon Johnston was continued at the Belvedere Range this afternoon by the local Volunteers. Messrs C. J. Jury and T. H. Hughes have each presented a shooting trophy, which will be allotted later in the season. Next week a school of instruction for* the officers and non-commissioned officers of the Fifth Battalion will be held here, when Lieutenant Colonel Bauchop, C.M.G., and Captai'i Chesney, A.A.G., and other members of the Staff will be present. Mr L. King, at one time on the local Post Office staff, and now at Wellington, ia spending a portion of his annual holiday here with his parents.
