AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Received September 26, 5.5 p.m SYDNEY, September 26.

The Amateur Boxing Championships were commenced yesterday, the opening roundß resulting as follows:—

Bantam-weights—Wennard (New Zealand) beat Robertson (Victoria). Feather-weight (New Zealand) beat Weeks (Tasmania). Bantam - weights - Richardson (Tasmania) beat King (New South Wales).

Feather - weight Fitzsimmonds (New South Wales) beat Roughsedge (Queensland).

Light-weight—-Lacey (New South Wales) beat Sutherland (Victoria); O'Sullivan (New South Wales) beat Finnerty (New Zealand). Welter-weight—House (Tasmania) beat Watchorn 'New Zealand); Currie (Victoria) beat McPhie (New South Wales). Middle-weight—Mid wood (Tasmania) beat Fullalove (Victoria), Gunning (New South Wales) beat Russell (Queensland). Heavyweight—Thompson (New South Wales) beat Knott (Queensland). Heavy-weight—Waldie (Victoria) beat Rogan (New Zealand). MASTERTON CENTRE. A very enthusiastic meeting of local residents was held in the Do ■ minion Hall on Saturday last, wi th a view to forming a centra in Mas ■ terton for the proposed Wairarapa Boxing Association, and amongst those present being:—Messrs A. P. Whatman, W. Cameron, W. B. Chennells, J. H. Pauling, V. Donald, G. W. Sellar, H. MaeDougall, Saville Smith, W lorns, and R. 0. Jarrett and others. Mr Whatman occupied th2 chair, and very ably explained the objects of the meeting, with the result that it was unanimously agreed to create a local centre of the new Association. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr A. C. Major; President, Mr A. P. Whatman; Vice-Presidents, Very Rtv. Dean McKtnna, Messrs W. D. Watson and A. W. Cave; General Committee, Messrs Earl Williams, W. B. Chennells, J. H. Pauling, V. Donald, R. 0. Smith, G. W. Sellar, W. H. Jackson, G. C. Summerell, R. 0. Jarrett, D. Caselherg, W. Cameron; Hon. Surgeons, Drs. Hosking, Cook, Cowie and Prior; Hen. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr Savilie Smith. It was decided to limit the number of active members to fifty. Several matters of interest were discussed part'cularly the desirability of securing a first class instructor. Mr Whatman showed practical sympathy with the movement by offering the use of his hall in Dixon street for one year, free of all rent. A hearty vote of thanks w..s extended to Messrs Atack, Hankins and Jaeger, of the New Zeal an \ Manawatu and Hastings Boxing Associations, respectively, for assistance and information given. It was arranged to call a committee meeting after the proposed Wairarapa Association had been formed.

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION.

Representatives from Master ton and the Lower Valley, met at the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Cartel ton, on Saturday evening, Mr W. Howard Booth being in the chair. Letters were received from the following offering their support in the various districts of the Wairarapa:— Messrs W. Barton (Featherston), H. Hodge, (Gladstone), F. C. Tumor (fiketahuna). F. Kummer ville), A. P. Wnatman (Mastertnn), Hugh Morrison (Tinui and district), T. Hodgins (Pahiatua), W. Howard Booth (Carterton). It was stated that Mr A. B. Charters had been approached with regard to Greytown. It was decided to form a Wairarapa Boxing Association with headquarters at Masterton and sub centres at the towns above mentioned. The following officers were elected:--Patron: Mr W. Barton; President, Mr A. P. Whatman; Vice-Presidents, Messrs W. Howard Booth, H. Hodge, F. C. Turnor, F. Kummer, Hugh Morrison, T. Hodgins, A. B. Charters; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr Saville Smith: Hon. Auditor, Mr G. W. Selhr, The sub centres will each appoint a delegate to act m the Central Con mittee for the "raming of rules and other matters f importance. Mr Booth was heartily thanked for residing at tha meeting.
