The second annual handicap meeting under the auspices of the North Wairarapa Rifle Association was held on tne Fairview Rifle Range yesterday. The shooting was timed to start at 7.30 a m. sharp, and the range was early astir with officers of the Association and punctual competitors The weather conditions on the whole were favourable, the light being easy and the day cool. The wind was as goud as could be wished, varying occasionally, but not enough to prevent good average shooting. The competitions were handled in a systematic manner, with the result that between sixty and seventy riflemen had finished their day's shooting well before the.light failed. The innovation of making the sighter an optional counter was duly appreciated by the competitors, and in addition was the means of saving time. It is understood that the optional system will be adopted at Trentham this season for the first time On the whole the shooting was of a good standard, more especially as most of the riflemen were out of practice, the meeting being practically the signal for the commencement of the rifle shooting season in the Wairarapa. The marking was of a high order, the work being in the hands of experienced men. There were a few challenges, but only in one or two instances were they sustained. The management of the trench was in the very capable hands of Mr H. D. Mcintosh. Captain Welch was the officer in charge of the meeting, and Rifleman Matthews carried out /the duties Senior Range Officer to perfection. The secretarial work for the day was entrusted to Mr D. M. Mcintosh. He performed his duties admirably, and was the subject of many congratulations on the promptness with which he compiled his results, and distributed the prize money. Te catering was in the capable hands of Mr J. Wilkes, and thi enterprise and attention he showed in connection with his arrangements during the day was greatly appreciated by every competitor on the ground. The Gladstone Match was the first to be put through. This was fired in a south wind, the morning being on the chilly side, and the light was inclined to be dull. The 6-ihch "bull" was rather puzzling to a number of the competitors, who had not had any previous experience with the new regulation bull's eye. Rifleman H. Mawley, of the Opaki Club, won this competition, putting on the good score of 34 off the rifle. In the Whakataki-Tenui match tha conditions were, more favourable to good shooting, and the result was that several good scores were put up, notably those of Riflemen G. Hyde, of Opaki, and H. Williams, of Featherston, both of whom scored 34 off the rifle. Ihe same southerly wind prevailed, and the light became some-, what brighter. With tne commencement of .the Te Wharau match, the wind changed, blowing somewhat of a "fishtail," necessitating several degrees of wind allowance both left and right, which was puzzling to some of the younger shots. Rifleman Hyde was again to the front with a good score, winning the match from scratch with 33. Rifleman W. Bannister (Masterton Mounted Rifles) also scored 32 off the rifle. The conditions which prevailed during the firing of the Opaki Match was much more difficult, both the light and the wind varying to some extent.ultimately blowing to the right with varying strength. The result was that the standard of shooting was somewhat beluw the average, but it showed a slight improvement towards the completion of the range. Rifleman R. J. King, of Opaki, was a somewhat easy winner, his score off the rifle for the 700 yards being 32, The All Comers' Handicap Sweep.stake resulted in a Head heat between Rifleman H. Gebbie, of Dannevirke, and R. Barrer, of Te Wharau, and in the Handicap Grand Aggregate Rifleman W. Wrigley. of Bideford, and R. J. - King tied for first place. The Championship Aggregate was won by Riflqman R. J. King, who

made the splendid score of 12.5. Rifleman Hyde and W. Kummer tied for second place with a score of 123. Opaki B. won the Teams' Match from Te Wharau by 4 points, the winners' score being 58V.
