BRISK BUSINESS. ' SHARP RISE IN PRICES. Received September 22, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, September 21. The September series of London wool sales have opened, with brisk business. An advance of 15 per cent, has been established. OFFICIAL REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce ha 3 received the following cable message from tha High Commissioner, dated London, 21st September, 1909: — "Wool sales have com' menced. There is a brisk demand, and great competi- ! tion on the part of Ameri - can and Continental buyers. Supplies will be moderate. Market has advanced fully Id on average closing prices last sale." PnIVATE ADVICES. Cable advices received by the Wei lingon houses from their London agents confirm the report of advanced prices and keen competition. Mesrss Levin and C 0., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London Agents, the National Mortgage and Agency Company, of New Zealand, Ltd., dated 21st inst. —"Sqles have opened at an advance of 10 per cent, on Merino, and fine crossbreds, 15 per cent, on medium and coarse varieties. Americans and all other buyers are operating freely. There is a poor selection of wool, mostly slipe." Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report: "Wool sales opened with a large attendance of buyers, competition being animated but only on indifferent

selection offered. Prices for merinos generally and flue crossbreds show a 10 per cent, advance, and for medium and coarse crossbreds 10 per cent, to 15 per cent., advance. So •far hardly any merinos have been offered." Abraham and Williams, Ltd., have received the following cable advice from London The sales have opened with strong competition, and a large attendance of buyers, repre : senting Home, American and Continental houses. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade, and Americans are operating freely. Market for all wool is firm. Fine and crossbred merino are 10 per cent., medium crossbred 15 percent., coarse crossbred 12J per cent., slipe cent., to 15 per cent, higher 10 per than close of last sales. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., has received the following cablegram from its LonJon house, under date 21st inst.: —"Wool sales: There was full attendance at the opening of the sale 3 to-day, competition by Home, Continental and American buyers being active. Tne opening catalogues were fairly representative. As compared with last sabs' closing rates prices are about 5 to 1\ par cent, higher for merinos, an 1 about 10 to 15 per cent, higher for crossbreds.
