STEAMER SEEN ON FIRE.
I A CAPTAIN'S STORY. Received September 21, 8.25 a.m. LONDON, September 20. The steamer Harlow, .4212 tons belonging.to the Harrison line, of Sunderland,* has arrived here from Manila. The captain reports passing oa 27th July, about one hundred ami eighty miles from Duiban, a steamer on fire, which afterwards exploded. The owners of the Lund line do not believe the ves3ei seen could have been the Waratah. 1 Lloyds generally are sceptical in regard to the story. Received September 21, 10.5 p.m. LONDON, September.2l. Lund's state that there was nothing; of a particularly inflammable nature on boar J the Waratah. The carg>* consisted chiefly of frozen carcases and flour. Reuter's correspondent at Durbanstates that the Harlow arrived a Durban on July 28th, and stayed till the 31st, but the captain did not make any mention of passing a steamer on fire. Then, moreover, the steamer Guelph sighted the Waratah after the time mentioned by the captain of the Harlow. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 21. It is believed that Mr George Arkell, of Auckland, is one rf the passengers by the Waratah. He left some months ago for. Durban, and letters received by his friends indicated his intention of going on to England by a steamer leaving toward the end of July, which was about the time the Waratah left Durban. His last letters were received a month ago, since which time there has been no further word from him.
