COMPENSATION AWARDED. Received September 21, 8.40 a.m. NEW YORK, September 20. The Government of the Republic of Uruguay has offered the crew of the Halifax sealer Agnes Donahue £5,000 sterling as compensation for their imprisonment for alleged illegal sealing.

POOR RELIEF. ■& INCREASE IN RECIPIENTS IN ENGLAND. Received September 21, 8.25 a.m. LONDON, September 20. There ware 959,848 persons in receipl of poor relief in January, an increase of Bh per cent, over the number in January, 1908. The increase is mainly in Durham and the North Riding of Cumberland, where the numbers have advanced 20 and 30 per cent, respectively.
