Richard, Governor of New Caledonia, is now in Sydney, en route to France. In the course of an interview, M. Richard said that many statements respecting the condition of New Caledonia were literary exaggerations He admitted that there had been an [amount of poverty, but the crisis as passing away The cause of the depression, the Governor stated, as due to he cessation of transportation. France alone, without draining on colonial sources, had spent £5,400.000 sterling on this department, and the stoppage naturally affected busi' ness. Referring to the petition for separation -of the coLny from France, M. Richard said he looked upon it as a joke. He declared that the colony was one of the richest countries in the world.
