A DEPARTING CITIZEN.

The decision of MrF. W. G. McLeod to accept a lucrativ ■ position as bandmaster at Cobar (New South Wales) means that lUasterton will lose a public-spirited citizen, wbcss departure will be keenly regretted bymany in the community. 01 tha other hand, we have to congratulate Mr McLeod upon the appointment that he has obtained, and to wish hi n every succ<;«s in his new sphere of work. It is nearly ten years ago since Mr McLeod first came to Masterton, having' been appointed conductor of the Municipal Brass Band, and since then he has not only achieved distinction in band matters, but he has earned the respect of the community as a citizen of integrity and ability. Commencing in a very modest way as a bookseller and stationer he is now the senior partner in the large and widely known business of McLeod and Young. More than average ability is required to build up a business to such dimensions, and Mr McLeod had, in addition, musical engagements of . a responsible nature to fulfil, and Zound time as well to render valuable services to Kr.ox Church, in connection with which he has held several important positions. That Mr McLeod will succeed in Australia goes without saying, and it will certainly be a matter of satisfaction to him to know that he is highly appreciated in the community which he is about to leave. Elsewhere appears a brief record of Mr McLcod's career since first becoming a citizen of Masterton.
