IMPORTATION OF STUD SHEEP.
By the s.s. Moana, which arrivea in' Wellington on Friday, were five stud Shropshire Down rams, consigned to Mr A. J. Cooper, Maaterton. The rams came direct from the Melbourne Royal Show, where they have just been shown. The rams in question comprised four-tooth, bred by A. E. Mansell, Mt. Vernon, Tasmania, and which secured third prize in this class and was only beaten by two of Mr Mansell's own sheep, one of which was awarded first, special and champion, and was sold *fter the Show for 62 guineas, making the highest price hat the sales. There were a pair ot" ram hoggets, bred by Mr G. Simonds, Stonor, Tasmania, cne of which i was placed first at Sydney Royal in June in a pen of three, and the other being first as a single hogget at the same Show and highly commended in Melbourne. The remainI ing two are also hoggets, and were bred by H. K. Oldmeadow, Tasmania, and secured second as a pair in Melbourne, Mr Oldmeadows also winning the 75-guinea challenge cup for the best two ewes and a ram under 18 months. Both champion and reserve champion tickets in rams and ewes went to Mr Mansell and Mr Oldmeadows, breeders of these sheep, which goes to show that the rams in question came from the best blood in Tasmania. The sheep were selected for Mr Cooper in Melbourne by Mr H. H. Peck auctioneer of the firm of Peck and Sons, who is perhaps the best authority on Shropshires in Australia, barring Mr Mansell himself. The sheep were consigned through the New Zealand Express Company
(Fly and Young,, local agents), and were landed in excellent condition, showing careful.handling all through.
